Lake Sevan is one of the most popular destinations for tourists.
Lake Sevan, the pearl of Armenia, together with Lake Van and Lake Urmia was one of three large lakes of the Armenian Highland, the historic Armenian Kingdom. Currently it is the only one in the limits of present-day Armenia (Van is in Turkey, Urmia is in Iran). This lake of incomparable beauty with stunning turquoise waters is considered to be the second highest mountain lake in the world after Titicaca (Los Andes, Bolivia).
The lake is at an altitude of 1900 m above sea level surrounded by ridges of Pambak, Areguni, Sevan, Vardenis. The area is 1243 sq/km (5% of the territory of Armenia), the maximum depth is 78 m. 28 rivers and streams flow to the lake, only one stream of Hrazdan River, tributary of the Arax begins here. The peninsulas Artanish and Noratus divide the Sevan into Major and Minor Sevan. The bottom is uneven (26m-78m). The water temperature in summer reaches 20C. The duration of sunshine reaches 2400 hours per year.
The climate is rather cool here. Even in hottest time of the year you have to wait for water to get a bit warmer for swimming. It’s rather windy in the evenings. But in evening the lake is especially beautiful in the rays of sunset. Take some warm clothes with you to stay late and enjoy the most peaceful time.
Sevan offers different activities, such as swimming, surfing, hiking… Also don’t forget to visit Sevan peninsula with wonderful Sevanavank.
There are numerous restaurants along the shore. Barbecued fish is rather cheap and just delicious.
Sevan is about 70 km from Yerevan, so it takes less than an hour to reach there.
