Karavansarayes are public buildings on medieval trade routes, a sort of hotel for itinerant merchants and travelers. Such buildings are spread not only in Armenia but also in neighboring countries and in the East, on the Silk Road. The distance between them is set equal to the daily running of the caravans.
In general, the caravans were built by the great merchants and princes. The caravanserai known as Selim Karavansaray was built on the Silk Road, in 1332 commissioned by the Prince Chesar Orbelian.
