Only 5 km north from Hovhanavank in the village of Saghmosavank of Aragatsotn Province is the monastery Saghmosavank (Monastery of Psalms).
Both Hovhanavank as Saghmosavank are on the right bank of the picturesque river gorge Kasakh.
The main church complex Surb Zion (St. Zion) was built in 1215 by the order of Prince Vache Vachutyan. There is an altar apse on its eastern side and its south-eastern corner has two-floor side-chapels attached to it – a unique phenomenon in the structures of such purpose. In 1235, Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Virgin) with its vestibule was built and it communicates with the book repository. Saghmosavank Library is one of the most original buildings. The modest flat facade with its height does not yield to the main church. In the apse of the altar are the remains of frescoes. There is a 13th-14th century cemetery with many cross-stones located to the north of the complex.
