History Museum of Armenia was founded in 1921 as part of the museum complex in the Republic Square. The collection has about 400,000 objects. The permanent exhibition covers the entire history of the Armenian people. It has the following departments: Archeology (35% of the main collection), Ethnography (8%), Numismatics (45%), Documents (12%). History Museum of Armenia represents the history and culture of Armenia from prehistoric times till our days. The museum presents the rare traces of cultural interrelations with the ancient eastern countries in the Armenian Highland: Egypt, Mitany, the Hittite kingdom, Assyria, Iran, the Seleucid state, Rome and Byzantine Empire.
On the first floor there are six rooms adjacent to the famous khachkar exposed (cross-stone) the artisan embroidery Poghos (Paul) Goshavank Monastery, a beautiful collection of Armenian carpets, containers, jars and cups, carved in stone door of the monastery of Sevan (1171) and Tatev (1253), the model of Zvartnots temple, traditional cake molds called gata, charms, silver jewelry, etc. The last room is devoted to prehistoric times and Urartu: the copy of the head of the pagan goddess Anahit (fourth century, the original is in the British Museum), coins of different times and states, gold, silver and bone jewelry excavated from Karmir Blur, and Arin-Berd (III millennium BC), etc.
On the second floor around the stairs, you can see the huge map of historical Armenia. Two rooms to the right side are devoted to Dvin (s. VX) and Ani (s. X-Xi), ancient capitals of Armenia. Other rooms represent the decorative arts of the Middle Ages. In a room on the left there is a funeral car and other objects of the XV-XIV centuries BC. A room presents recent archaeological discoveries of Artashat objects (the capital of 2nd century BC to AD), and the famous marble statue of Aphrodite (Anahit).
