The Museum of Modern Art in Yerevan was the first modern art museum in the former Soviet Union. It was established in 1972. From that day it’s one of the most unique cultural centers on the post-Soviet area.
The first exposition was compiled of the works of the artists of 1960s both from Armenia and Diaspora, who have kindly donated their works to the museum.
The Museum, located at 5 Mesrop Mashtots Ave., was designed by architects G. Aramyan and J. Torosyan.
The use of cylindrical volumes elevated above the surface for the formation of the exposition area, the unusualness of the bonds of these volumes within the structure itself, makes the building of the museum nearly the only one in Yerevan, completed in the traditions of neo-construction.
The exposition establishes the perception of its architectural forms. The famous “Red Room” of Garzou (Garnik Zoulumyan) – one of the best Armenian contemporary painters living in Paris, opens the exhibition of paintings. The variety of artistic expression, technique and color give an idea about the various currents of modern Armenian painting.
Blades of M. Avetisyan, expertly used the emotional properties of light, side by side with the works of A. Hakobyan, creating a sense of silence, setting up the audience for philosophical reflection.
The paintings of V. Podpomogov with their imagination, emotion and sharp grotesque will make you remember the schedule series of “Capriccios” by Francisco Goya.
Works of the masters of painting such as G. Khanjyan, A. Galents, M. Petrosyan, L. Bazhbeuk-Melikyan and many others, amazing with strength and freshness of talented painters, show understanding of art as a special world of fantasy.
Since foundation the Museum was visited by many famous and popular personalities, among them were the academician, director of Hermitage Boris Piotrovsky, writer Chingiz Aytmatov, Italian poet, writer and screenwriter Tonino Guerra, Mexican painter David Alfaro Sikeyros, Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni etc.
