Yereruyk Cathedral is located 105 km away from Yerevan, in the region of Shirak, in the village Anipemza, on the Akhuryan river gorge. It is one of the most important and beautiful monuments of early Christian times (V-Vl c.) and is a classic example of a basilica. The basilica-style building is erected on a large plinth approached by steps.
The architecture of Yereruyk has certain features of Syrian architecture and in its turn gave rich material to the next period of Armenian architectural-building art. The architectural details were processed with artistic delicate taste. From all the sides, basilica is encircled with many-stepped socles.
The height of the nave, the arcades, the capitals of Corinthian style reveals the influence of Hellenistic stirrups though the features of early Christian architecture are visible in the decoration of the outbursts and the edges of the front door of the south wall.
Although Yereruyk Cathedral was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the seventeenth century, it still stands among the archaeological remains of ecclesiastical and secular buildings. In 1995, Yereruyk was included in the provisional list of World Heritage of UNESCO in accordance with criteria III , IV, VI.
