Meghri city, with population of 4.8 thousand people, is located 264 km away from Yerevan, on the southern Syunik region, at an altitude of about 630m above sea level. Foothills of Meghri Ridge are an area of dry subtropics of Armenia. Like everywhere in Zangezur, here steppes give way to alpine meadows, and on the irrigated lands you can see blooming gardens. Apples and pears, peaches and figs from these city are famous all over the Syunik, as well as all over Armenia.
Beauty of Meghri and its picturesque are not determined by the architecture of the houses and the overall planning, but by the rational and detailed use of the terrain. The winding streets of Meghri are divided into quarters, sometimes located at some distance from each other. Lack of territory and the need for protection from the mountain winds have forced the residents to build their homes close, sometimes even right next to each other, their facades are often enlivened with loggias and balconies adorned with exquisite carvings.
The town has a church called St. Hovhannes, which was built in XVII century, with the iconography unusual for Armenian churches. For Meghri the road turns right and along the fence with barbed wire, where river Araks runs. Here you can see the border crossing into Iran.
It was opened relatively recently. Currently, it is the only safe passage connecting Armenia with the outside world.
