At the bottom of Mesrop Mashtots Avenue stands a monumental building. It is Matenadaran, museum, depository and institute scientific research of manuscripts. The word comes from the ancient Armenian and means “depository of manuscripts”.
A staircase leads to the monuments of Mesrop Mashtots, Koryun, homage of Ghukas Chubarian to the creator of Armenian alphabet. In front of the building there are the statues of the most famous representatives of Armenian medieval culture are standing.
The museum has 17.000 manuscripts: 11.000 complete Armenian manuscripts, about 3.000 fragments and recent manuscripts, 3.000 manuscripts in various languages and 100.000 documents, manuscripts from the fifteenth-century. The permanent showroom represents a fraction of the wealth of the museum, however the samples are of the best and remarkable and rationally classified.
