The place of the fortress was wisely chosen: the builders took advantage of the singularities of the mountainous terrain and like the fortress of Garni it was built on a triangular promontory defended by two sides with deep crevices and only the third side is protected with a solid wall. The fortress is at the height of 2300 meters and it was called Amberd, which means fortress is in the clouds.
Amberd is one of the few preserved feudal castles in Armenia today. The castle walls of Amberd are made of large blocks of basalt. The style is very severe, without ornaments and decorations. In 1026 one of the finest churches of Armenia was built. The architect built it on a sharp rock and its architecture is very severe.
Excavations in 1929 uncovered many objects of Amberd undoubtedly brought to Armenia from different eastern and western countries, as well as a Roman bath.
